The Motorola Droid X compared to the
Samsung Fascinate
Gary J. Hardt 01/04/2011
DISPLAY
Droid X - 8/10
Fascinate - 8/10
The Motorola Droid X has a 4.3 in. LCD display and resolution is 480 by
854 compared to the 4.0 in. Super AMOLED 480 by 800 display. I like the
bigger screen size myself although the Fascinate, with its Super AMOLED
screen does have brighter colors. I've seen it in person and it really
does a nice colorful display. Text on the droid X is sharer.
CAMERA
Droid X - 10/10
Fascinate - 8/10
The Droid X has an 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash while
the Samsung Fascinate only has a 5 megapixel camera with a single flash.
The Droid X picture quality is superior. I also prefer the camera
shutter actuator on the Droid X because there is a physical button to
push.
VIDEO RECORDER
Droid X - 9/10
Fascinate - 10/10
Both cameras record video in up to 720p. The Droid X records at 24 fps
while the Fascinate records at 30 fps. The Fascinate video quality is
better than the Droid X, though the difference is negligible.
PROCESSOR
Droid X - 9/10
Fascinate - 8/10
The Droid X has a 1GHZ TI Omap processor as compared to the 1 GHZ
Hummingbird processor that comes standard on the Fascinate. The Droid X
has better CPU performance while the Fascinate has better Graphics
Processing Unit (GPU) performance. Both have integrated GPUs.
INTERFACE
Droid X - 7/10
Fascinate - 7/10
Motorola utilizes the UI-Moto blur (toned down) for its interface while
Samsung utilizes the Tuchwiz 3.0 interface. The Droid X Motorola
interface allows you to resize the widgets on it, which is a plus. Only
phones with the Motorola skin on them can do this. The Fascinate cannot.
OPERATING SYSTEM
Droid X - 10/10
Fascinate - 9/10
The Droid X comes with the Android Version 2.2 (Froyo). The Samsung
Fascinate comes with the 2.1 (Eclair) OS that is upgradeable to the 2.2
(Froyo). I prefer the 2.2 Froyo because it has flash support. The Eclair
doesn't. It’s only a short time before the Gingerbread OS upgrade will
be available too.
BATTERY
Droid X - 9/10
Fascinate - 9/10
Droid X N/A Fascinate N/A
The Droid X has 1540 mAh battery while the Samsung Fascinate only has
1500 mAh. Both battery times are about the same with only a 2.5%
difference. User settings and running applications are likely to be of
much greater impact than the 40 mAh difference.
STANDBY TIME
Droid X - 7/10
Fascinate - 10/10
The “X” is listed with 220 hours standby battery power while the
Fascinate will last 312 hours in standby. Even with a slightly bigger
battery the Droid has fewer standby hours. The Fascinate uses less power
due to the Super AMOLED display which uses significantly less power.
Although the standby is greater on the Fascinate, I wouldn't actually
leave it sitting for 12 days without using or recharging it.
TALK TIME
Droid X - 8/10
Fascinate - 8/10
Droid’s talks time is 480 minutes compared to only 420 minutes on the
Fascinate. This means you can talk on the Droid X up to 8 hours and the
Samsung Fascinate for only up to 7 hours before recharging. While this
may seem to be a significant difference, the talk time drastically
decreases on the X if you use it for anything but talking. The Fascinate
on the other hand does not.
OTHER
Droid X - 9/10
Fascinate - 8/10
Both have WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, accelerometer (used for gaming, photos,
videos and web browsing so that your display rotates with your phone),
proximity sensor, WIFI hotspot (both can run up to 5 devices) and are
DLNA compatible (The Digital Living Network Alliance® began in 2003 when
a collection of companies from around the world agreed that they all
made better products when those products were compatible.) Both have
some positives and negatives. The Droid X utilizes the Bluetooth 2.1 as
opposed to the Fascinate, which uses 3.0. The Fascinate is made mostly
of plastic and is ultra-light weight. While this is good, in my opinion
this makes it feel cheap. The Droid X is constructed of lightweight
metal which makes the phone feel a little heavier and more sturdy.
FINAL COMPARISON
Droid X - 86/100
Fascinate - 85/100
Overall the phones comparison is nearly equal with the Motorola Droid X
barely outpacing the Fascinate. With these two phones it all comes down
to personal preference. |
